Free tool · Remove location
Remove the location from a photo
Every phone and many cameras write where a picture was taken into the file. Drop photographs here and get them back without their GPS position — the pixels untouched, nothing uploaded.
Nothing is uploaded: the file is read and handled in this page, on your device.
What is removed, and what stays
Removed: the GPS block of the EXIF, the GPS and place fields of the XMP — city, region, country, sub-location — the location fields of the IPTC, and any Content Credentials manifest, which can repeat the place.
Kept: camera, lens, settings, date, copyright, author, orientation and colour profile.
Not re-encoded
The picture is never decoded or compressed again. The metadata is edited in place, so the image data comes out byte for byte identical — no loss of quality.
Nothing leaves your device
Files are read and cleaned in this page, in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to Peak or anywhere else — a tool for removing your location should not need to see it.
Which files
The formats whose location can be removed without touching the picture:
- JPEG, PNG and WebP
- TIFF and DNG
- Not HEIC or camera RAW files (CR2, NEF, ARW…): removing their location safely would mean re-encoding them — export a JPEG first
It fails safe
When the tool meets a structure it does not fully understand, it gives you nothing rather than a file that might still carry the location.
For every client, automatically
This is the code behind Remove location in a Peak room. Switch it on and every file your clients download from the room comes without its position, while the originals in your library keep theirs.
Questions
- Why remove the location from a photo?
- A photograph taken at home, at a client’s house or at a school can give the address away to anyone who opens the file. Phones and many cameras record the GPS position by default, and most ways of sharing a file pass it on untouched.
- Does removing the location reduce quality?
- No. Only the metadata is edited; the image data is not re-encoded, so the picture is exactly as it was.
- Is my photo uploaded?
- No. Everything happens in your browser, and the page sends no file anywhere.
- How can I check whether a photo carries its location?
- Drop it in the tool: it shows the coordinates it read before cleaning, or says there was no location to remove.
